Earlier this month I had the chance to spend a week in Ohio with my favorite graphic designer, Little Niki. I stayed in the small college town of Kent, about an hour south of Cleveland, a nice change from the big city life. Ohio is a complete 180 of the city i know and love, but with its own beauty, open fields, farms, and some cold weather. Not to mention I experienced my first snow.
Before heading out to Ohio, Niki and I had been brainstorming a poster for us to print in her Letterpress class while I was in town. I had herd of Letterpress before but wasn’t 100% sure on how it worked. Honestly all I knew was it was a way to print using big presses and letters. We were able to do everything from look through drawers to find the right letters. Different fonts, different sizes, wood block, steel blocks. The choices were endless. Somehow we even found an old Chicken Hawk looking block.Locking up our type was next. Making sure the letters wouldn’t move after each roll of the press, using different sized spacers to keep it all together.
Inking rollers was interesting, a tiny mount of ink and then we had to manually crank the rollers to get the rubber based ink to spread evenly. The cool thing about the manual roller was the fact that we were able to make a split fountain of colors using 3 different colored inks set on opposite sides of the rollers.
The great Greg Lemond once said “it never gets easier you just go faster” a quote that has kept me going when i’ve felt like my legs are going to explode. Hopefully it will be something you can put up and your wall and it will motivate you the way it has motivated me.
We made a limited run of each color, each one being a little different because of the way they were printed. Im selling these on my Chicken Hawk LA store at $20 each. All the money goes towards Chicken Hawk Courier, saving up for our FIRST CARGO BIKE!
PS. dont forget you can still order our Chicken Hawk Courier Endo Customs Cycling Kit! Pre Order is open until Sunday March 31, 2013!
